I need an instuction manual for a Marantz SR685 audio/receiver Getting replacement instruction manuals are quite easy. The best place to replace the instruction manual is from the website of the product manufacturer.

I just bought this receiver off of the bay along with a separate Marantz 2 channel amp for 500$. This receivers performance is supposed to be legendary and it weighs in at over 60lbs. Coming from using an old Kenwood Vr606 without HDMI and a Pioneer VSX1120k with 5 HDMIs that I didnt use, I was not concerned about the lack of HDMIs on this receiver. I have always used the optical port from my TV to the optical port of the receiver with great results. Not this time.
I have tried all of the opticals on the receiver to no avail. I have tried using the optical from my Tivo XL to no avail. I even tried to hear a hiss from the speakers with it all the way up without a sound. I tried using the FM tuner and heard nothing as well. My TV is a 550 series Samsung that only has 3HDMIs , 2 USBs, (neither will help in this case) component video in and an optical out. Please help!

It would seem the AVR optical inputs are defective although if even the TUNER doesn't work the issue may be more severe. You could try using an optical --> coax converter or otherwise test the coax connections (ie. does the TiVo have a coax digital output you can test with using a composite video (yellow) cable?) to see if they work. Also check the owner's manual to see if there is a specific power up procedure that will reset the AVR's microprocessor.

If even the tuner won't work, the thing obviously has serious problems.
Do the analog inputs work with a CD player or other device? One does roll the dice when one gets a supposedly good unit cheap, with no chance to check it out first. Caveat emptor.

Is the 2 channel amp connected?
Also check the jumpers on the back of the SR14.

No coax out on Tivo

Correction; I paid over 600$ with shipping for the receiver. The seller offered to refund my money, however I wouldn't mind seeing it repaired. I had to clearance the back of my HT stand to fit the damn thing in there! I would like to see UPS pay for the damage as the box that it came in was damaged.

I've been using my SR-14EX for the past two years. Luckily I purchased it off the bay from MSS Audio with a short warranty. I would say that it is worth repair up to a point. If it is just a loose power connection internally, go for it. If it is a board that has been damaged.. I would return the electronics.
In defense of a dozen year old AV receiver, it has a wonderful preamp. The five 140W per channel are desirable today. And it will work with your external two channel amps for 7.1 systems. It's weaknesses are a lack of digital video connections, modern multichannel sound formats and the need for a modern remote control. The original PRONTO based remote is way too long in the tooth to use. The build quality is incredible. One thing if you do have repairs to the unit is to have the capacitor that holds some charge to keep the programming memory is useful to have replaced now. It almost certainly is dead by now and will not keep your settings when the power is pulled. I received a fantastic champagne color unit, that got checked out and had that maintenance done. That one extra expense after purchase was well worth the money. Good luck with the outcome.

The guy that answers the phones told me that the tech listed 23, yes twenty three bad parts in this unit with a parts cost of 450$ so far. I won't know until Monday as to what parts are bad and how much the labor would be.

With everything off on this SR-14EX, depress the power button. I'm assuming the display still functions but you should hear a loud click from the back of the unit after a couple of seconds. This is the sound of the speaker protection relays. If you don't hear this click, then the receiver is in speaker-protect mode and you will obviously not hear any output from it. If you live in the SF Bay Area, I can fix it for you for much less. I have fixed a bunch of receivers from this Marantz receiver family ( SR-14EX, SR-18[EX], SR-19[EX]) and I still have many parts for them. I still have my SR-14EX in my hometheater.

I am a bit underwhelmed on the features this receiver has. It is in no way flexible but has very strong, clear, warm detailed sound.
A few questions about it though, I haven't been able to get THX surround EX? ( says incompatible source) DTS says not available or something like that? Do both of these only work through digital coax? I'm stuck with optical. Are speaker levels adjustable? I'm just trying to get the most out of this receiver

These are poor generalizations by both groups. It depends on what price point you are at and what you are comparing it to and is reflective of perceptions based on different price points in both lines. Putty serial port scripts expression. I think every statement you make is true depending on your perspective.
When you begin digging into the technical specs, there are a lot of overlapping parts used in both lines, especially at the high end. The very high end of both companies (Denon AVR-4520 vs Marantz SR7008) will sound similar. The primary deviations are in video processing where the Denon actually wins out.
At the low end, the differences become much more obvious. The Marantz line compromises very little from an audio quality perspective to hit a price point and by extension, never gets really inexpensive. Marantz has some low power units that are modestly priced, but nothing you would define as inexpensive. The NR1403 is a 5 channel, 50w receiver.
The Denon line is allowed to compromise greatly. Take the Denon AVR-1913 at $349 and is a 7 channel 90w reciever. Cheat engine 5.5 failure enabling speed hack dll injection failed download. Marantz has nothing to compete at that price point relatively speaking. The Denon is a touch brighter than anything in Marantz's line. It is no where near a bright as an Onkyo, Pioneer, Sony, Yamaha, etc.. but bright relative to Marantz. When you consider the price point and the quality of sound relative to competition, it is an amazing value but not in the same class as anything from Marantz. Compared to any Marantz unit, there is a big loss in detail and overall sound quality. This really becomes apparent with sound tracks.
Matshita dvd driver update. So effectively, if you are looking at the low end, Denon can truly be called bright relative to Marantz while at the high end that is untrue. Alternatively, you could say that at the high end, there is virtually no difference in accuracy and quality while at the low end, it would be untrue.
Either way, D&M makes great products for the money and depending on your price point and what your wants/needs are should dictate a choice.
